Natural Skin Care DIY Cleanser

As more information comes to light regarding the damaging effects of chemicals and other unnatural ingredients in many commercial skincare products, the desire to move toward natural alternatives is common.

Navigating the products available at the store can be difficult; many products don’t fully disclose ingredients and a number of brands marketed as “natural” are nothing of the sort.

This can be discouraging and stressful.

The best way I have found to combat this problem is to make my own products.

Thankfully, making natural skincare products is not as complicated as it sounds. In fact, many of the cleansers I am sharing with you today involve no mixing or measuring at all.

Making your own facial cleanser is a great way to avoid putting chemicals on your skin (and into your bloodstream). Plus, it’s likely to save you money.

 1. Honey

honey

The beauty of using honey as a facial cleanser is that there is no need for mixing or measuring! Just keep a bottle of honey in the bathroom cabinet and you’re set.

Honey can be used daily as a facial cleanser. It does an excellent job of cleaning skin and is extremely moisturizing; so it helps make skin soft and smooth.

Honey is an excellent cleanser for every skin type.

To wash your face with honey: For make-up free skin, squirt a small amount of honey (less than a teaspoon) into the palm of your hand. Rub the honey between your palms and then massage into your face. Wash off with warm water.

To remove make up with honey, pour a small amount of honey onto a wet wash cloth and sprinkle with a little baking soda. Use this honeyed washcloth to clean the face. Remove any residue with warm water. Follow with toner to get rid of excess dirt.

Honey can enhance your beauty routine  in many ways, including being used as a hair treatment.

Variations: Mix a little milk or cream with honey for a a cleanser especially suited to dry skin. For extremely oily skin, try adding a little lemon juice to the honey.

2. Oil

The oil cleansing method has grown increasingly popular over the past few years, and for good reason; cleaning your face with oil makes skin soft and radiant.

Plus, it’s easy! Just apply oil to the face with your finger tips using circular motions. Let it sit for a few minutes, and wash off with warm water. For extra benefits, hold a warm washcloth close to your oil-covered face for a minute or two and allow the stream to open the pores.

Castor Oil is one of the most common oils used in the oil cleansing method, but other oils are well-suited to the task, and many custom mixes can be created by blending different oils.

3. Yogurt

Plain yogurt is a great natural cleanser. It is rich in protein, lactic acid, and fat, which all help detoxify as well as clean skin.

Use plain yogurt or mix with lemon juice to create a cleanser with a more pleasing scent. To make a lemon yogurt cleanser, mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with approximately 1 tablespoon of yogurt.

A drop or two of essential oil can also be added to plain yogurt for a sweet smelling cleanser.

Use fingertips to apply yogurt to skin, massaging it to loosen any dirt or make up. Leave yogurt on the skin for a minute or two (if you have time), then wash off with warm water.

4. Cleansing Grains

Cleansing grains gently exfoliate as well as clean the skin.

Create your own cleansing grains by grinding almonds or oats into a fine powder and mixing with  liquid to form a paste.

Suitable liquids include:

  • milk, cream or yogurt for dry skin
  • lemon juice or water for oily skin
  • water, honey, peppermint tea or glycerin for normal skin

To use cleansing grains: gently massage paste into skin, avoiding the eyes. Wash off with warm water.

Other grains that are suitable for creating a gentle exfoliating cleanser are: cornmeal, ground sunflower seeds, baking soda, wheatgerm, and rice bran.

This type of cleanser needs to be made on an as-needed basis. However, the process can be expedited by keeping a jar of dry grains in the bathroom cabinet along with a small bowl and spoon for preparing the cleanser.

As you can see, it doesn’t have to be difficult to make and use natural cleansers.

Love is gnawing on my mind
Feeling real down
All dressed up in my new suit
Took my name, my sight, my sound

Been trying to find myself all day long
I heard ’em say
Love’ll be your curse or a restless friend
Love belongs in movies
Now I know I played with your heart
Cause when I turned back around I saw
You in someone else’s arms
Walking round town
All dressed up making your move
But I was scared to fall in love
I never thought I’d be the one
That would push you in her arms

Oh baby it’s code
I want you to hold me
And love me til I want no more
Need me, and need me til I need no more
Baby it’s code
Baby it’s code

But I was scared to fall in love
I never thought I’d be the one
That would push you in her arms, oh!

Oh baby it’s code
I want you to hold me
And love me til I want no more
Need me, and need me til I need no more
Baby it’s code
Baby it’s code

Oh baby, hey baby
I wanna be in your arms, oh
Please don’t leave
Please I need a nurse
I’ve been hurt
I need a glass of Merlot Blanc
I know I was wrong
But can’t you see
The harm that’s been done to me, oh!

Let’s talk SHRINKAGE

First of all, to those following me and those who will in the future (I hope!) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!! My NYE was pretty eventful! Memories made that will last a LIFETIME! Let’s try to stick to our resolutions, aye? More like our 1 week commitment! LOL! Only 6% of Americans actually keep them.. Now, back to the subject at hand!

SHRINKAGE!  Exhibit A then B

ImageImageWhat is shrinkage, and why does it only seem to occur in women of color? (The Structure of Our Hair)

Different ethnic groups have observable differences in the structure, density, and growth rate of hair. With regards to structure, all human hair has the same basic chemical composition in terms of keratin protein content.[6] Franbourg et al. have found that Black hair may differ in the distribution of lipids throughout the hair shaft.[6] Classical Afro-texture hair has been found to be not as densely concentrated as other phenotypes.[1] Specifically, the average density of Afro-textured hair was found to be approximately 190 hairs per square centimeter. This was significantly lower than that of Caucasian hair, which, on average, has approximately 227 hairs per square centimeter.[1]

Loussourarn found that Afro-textured hair grows at an average rate of approximately 256 micrometers per day, while Caucasian hair grows at approximately 396 micrometers per day.[1][7] In addition, due to a phenomenon called ‘shrinkage’, Afro-textured hair that is a given length when stretched straight can appear much shorter when allowed to naturally coil.[8] Shrinkage is most evident when Afro-hair is (or has recently been) wet.

Laymen’s Terms

So pretty much our hair shrinks up because it is in our genetics. Some women will have 3A-3C hair while others are 4A-C.. None the less embrace it, whatever your texture! Scientifically proven, all that other ish.. LOL! Shoutout to Wikipedia!

I decided to blow dry my hair on a medium setting.. I won’t be doing that again. I’m absolutely terrified of heat damage.. And to think I use to WANT my hair to be “trained” translation of that bullshit is HEAT DAMAGE! But hey, you live and you learn, right?? GOOD! I write this blog to say this.. Learn to embrace the shrinkage, because it is your friend, and is a sign of healthy hair. It’s a bit of a struggle to combat, but with patient and care you’ll find what works for you!

Jamaican Blk Castor Oil and Hair Growth

Image

I’ve started using JBCO (Jamaican blk castor oil) and a spray bottle filled with water to mist my hair daily, and the length retention has been AMAZING!! JBCO has some amazing properties as far as hair growth goes..

Image 6/6/2013 I Big chopped on 3/3/2013

Image11/2013 8 months after I big chopped! Shrinkage is REAL.

JBCO stimulates the hair follicles, and is an anti fungal oil that does WONDERS for the health of your scalp, which is essential for hair growth! I’ll get into all of the science behind it in another post. I’m a former product junkie, but these days.. All I need is my JBCO, and a spray bottle full of water! My regime is SIMPLE! From March to October I have acquired 7 inches of growth on my 4b type hair. I only use shampoo every MONTH, I co-wash every 2 weeks.. I use my JBCO to massage into my scalp (do this on lightly damp hair) take a small smidget of JBCO and apply to my ends.. Then I lightly mist each section, twist it up and bantu knot it! I’ve rocked protective styles for all 8 months! I have a collection of wigs, you know to SPICE it up since I’m only using protective styling.. Don’t get it twisted fellas we have hair, but we deal with this evil thing called SHRINKAGE!! #IHateThatShit #ButMyHairHealthyTho.. Ladies and Gents remember to mist the hair daily.. The key to growing natural hair especially those of use with 4 type hair is MOISTURE and little to manipulation to your beautiful tresses!! That is all for this blog post, let me get back to work! HAPPY GROWING LOVELIES!!

New Growth and Me

I would first like to say I thank GOD that my hair grows extremely fast, but when you try to KEEP a protective style in your head that you actually PAID for, it becomes a bit frustrating. Which is why I generally do my own p.s. (Naturalista on a budget). Luckily I only paid $55 for these box braids and not $200 from my local African hair braiding shop! LOL! Needless to say these have only been in for 3 weeks and I had to R.I.P. them! Oh, and I tried that “The Mane Choice” product line! My review on it, in my next post!!! Goodnight my loves!!

Image3 weeks of new growth.. Had me out here looking like “Trife Life” but as you can see I was not bluffing about how fast my hair grows.. Let it BE and it will grow NATURALLY and rapidly! I promise!
